Photographer's Note

In the spring of 2012 it was reported that a Mandarin duck had been spotted in the Fyris River. During about ten days it could be seen either in the Swan pond in central Uppsala or in the Fyris River. Then it seemed to have enough of all the attention and disappeared.
The natural habitat of the Mandarin duck (Aix galericulata) is East Asia. Its colourful plumage has made it popular as an ornamental bird in the duck ponds in parks and zoos far outside its natural habitat. As early as the 1740's Mandarin ducks were introduced in parks in England and later, parks in several other countries acquired these colorful ducks During the 1900s Mandarin ducks escaped and feral populations were established. Mandarin ducks are now nesting regularly in several locations in Europe. In Sweden feral Mandarin ducks are rare.
