Cruising through central Stockholm, a photo from Sodermanland, Svealand

Photographer's Note

I wouldn't claim that this is the very heart of Stockholm, but it is in the area known as "the inner city".

I was standing on Södermalm island when taking this photo on a beautiful day in early autumn. To the right is the much smaller Långholmen (Long Islet), where the country's major prison was located until the 1970's (and where the last execution took place in 1910 with a newly acquired guillotine, never to be used again). Nowadays the island is mainly used for recreational purposes and the prison has been converted to a budget hotel and a hostel.

Stockholm's "inner city" is loosely defined as the area inside a line drawn between the former toll stations, where farmers had to pay taxes on the goods they were bringing into the city. This toll system was started in 1622 to raise money for Sweden's participation in the European 30 years war. Three toll stations were placed on Södermalm, and although the system was scrapped in 1810 their names remain: Skanstull on the southern tip of the island, Hornstull in the west and Danvikstull in the east.

This photo was taken near Hornstull. The 'Map: view' will show you approximately where I was standing.

The last execution in brazil was during imperial times at the end of 19th century.
An image full of green but with golden touches. I liked the boat in movement.

"Sixty year ago a very important day for me, this was my married day together with my wife today".
Colours and sharpness are excellent done, also so nice autumn pictures together.

Very peaceful looking narrow waterway near the heart of the city. Autumn colours make nice mix on this one. A couple of weeks later there were at their best I guess.

Sikke et dejligt billede med det fine, solrige efterårsvejr i denne her grønne del af Stockholm. Farverne i træerne er meget smukke, især foran den lyseblå himmel. Båden der kom forbi gør det hele mere livligt.

Hi Gert,the map is once again useful to understand where you were moving and photographing. Same place as the other photo but in the opposite direction, and a perfect day with autumn colors that are slow to arrive in Italy while here they were already available a month ago, in fact this view is very reminiscent of the Naviglio canal that crosses my village. Hello Gert,
One of the great things Stockholm can be proud of is the abundance of water and greenery.
I don't know if there are more hostels in a former prison in Stockholm. If only one, then I spent some of my nights in Stockholm in that hostel too. Very comfortable and the biggest choice of breakfast I've ever seen anywhere.

It's not quite Amsterdam but it has a more relaxed atmosphere and plenty of greenery. Good inclusion of the fg boat to add a focal point. Nice reflections & Autumn colours. Good sharpness and framing too. Tfs!

Beautiful autumn colours also reflected in water. The boat makes for a good point of focus. Looking at the link, it's not that very far from Riddarholmen (but I didn't really have to look as I know where Sodermalm is in relation to the centre of Stockholm!)
