Solnedgång över Hjälmaren
Coucher de soleil sur Hjälmaren
Sunset over Hjälmaren

The geography of central southern Sweden is marked by the presence of four large lakes: Vänern (5648 km2), Vättern (1893 km2), Mälaren (1140 km2), and finally Hjälmaren (484 km2) seen on this photo. Hjälmaren has an average depth of only 6.2 m, a maximum depth of 20 m, and the topography around the lake is quite flat. The photo was taken from the north side of Vinön, the largest island in Hjälmaren. Small Vinön has an area of about 4.5 km2 and is home of a hundred or so permanent residents. In summer, the island is easily accessible by free ferry from the south shore of Hjälmaren. Without being spectacular, it’s certainly a pretty island. A nice place to relax, have a swim, enjoy the rural atmosphere, the village life. The photo was taken just after 22h, the latest sunset I have seen this year.
