Photographer's Note

This is a stump- or log-windmill typical for Íland - the long island situated just outside the east coast of Sweden - also known as the island of sun and winds! Today there are 355 remaining of these windmills, which stand on a stump or log around which the whole house is turned depending on wind direction.

One night in November my daughter needs to have a talk with me and we decide on a ride to Kalmar - a city on the east coast of Sweden some 175 miles away - as that's where I grew up and also where my parents lie buried. (Driving at night is excellent for long talks!) Just as we go away she tells me, that she has brought my old Olympus OM1 along.

When we reach Kalmar it's still dark, so we continue over the bridge to Íland to meet the dawn. Near the Baltic Sea we discern this beautiful old windmill. It's about one hour before sunrise at 7:30, shallow fog, temp -3C and I have no tripod. I lean on the car and choose an exposure time hopefully long enough for the light, but short enough not to be blurred. I have a hard time just seeing the windmill in the viewer...

After developing the film last week I notice that the camera has let in a ray of light at many photos! So this is most likely the last one I take with that camera, as I have a new digital one now. That's the end!

Taking this picture aroused my inclination to photography again, so three days later I joined TrekEarth. That's the beginning!

For my daughter that night was also some kind of an end and a beginning!!

The print came out as it did and was very hard to work with. Maybe the symbolism wasn't worth it? However, I scanned it at 300dpi, ran it through NeatImage, cropped, adjusted brightness -20 and contrast -30(!), resized, sharpened more - faded to 75%, retouched dust spots, framed it and saved for Web.

I know the image and my post-processing have deficiencies, so all critiques and comments are welcome!

In an odd addition: For the following Christmas I got this photo enlarged and framed, as a gift for my daughter. And she did the same for me!
