Photographer's Note

This is all about defeating time and gravity. A new bridge over the fjord Idefjorden outer narrow passage Svinesund is being built. This bridge will also cross the border between Sweden and Norway. The bridge is a link between Sweden and Norway, maybe more important for the Norwegians as it is their road to continental Europe.

When plans were made a certain construction time was taken into account. This had to be shortened drastically when someone high up decided that it would be nice to let the royalties have the opening ceremony on the 100th anniversary of the split June 10th 1905 of the Swedish-Norwegian Union. A few contractors accepted to bid on this while others pulled out of the competition. So far it seems that the promise can be kept by working around the clock, against all odds.

The bridge itself is special, it is the largest free standing single arch with an arch span of 247 m. The top of the arch is 97 m over sea level. Read more about the job in a brochure from the road administrations. It is in a mix of Swedish and Norwegian but the pictures speak for themselves.

The cranes in the middle of bridge are working on the removal of the blue trusses under the bridge. The trusses are only launching supports, in the final design the bridge rests on the narrow supports via cross beams between the two runways.

As this is the border of the European Common Market(EU) and Norway the bridge builders ran into customs problems. Plans on how to get the steelsections delivered had to be changed as the Norwegian customs had a problem with letting them be shipped to Norway and transported on land to Sweden and then launched out on site to end up in Norway. Material transported on a cable crane over the construction site and then built into the bridge also had to have customs declarations.
