Photographer's Note

Exhausted and freezing cold, after 20km of the worst road on the Camino, I stagger into Roncesvallis. All the buildings were in darkness. I stumbled into the albergue driven by inner compulsion that had kept me going through snow, rain and wind. Everything seems so still except for me gulping air and my heart beat that felt like drums in my chest.

Roncesvallis is not a town but a medieval abbey, and a resting place for pilgrims. The hostel accommodates 120 people in bunk beds, and is one of the largest single rooms communal on route.
