Photographer's Note

A man stands in awe of the statue of Philip III in Plaza Mayor, Madrid. Or, maybe, he is just checking his mobile phone, a favourite occupation of many people these days.

The equestrian statue of Philip III was created by Giambologna, a Flemish sculptor, in 1616 but it was not placed in the square until 1848. Originally installed at the Casa de Campo, the statue was a gift from the then Duke of Florence. Queen Isabel II ordered it to be moved from Casa de Campo to become the centrepiece of the Plaza Mayor.
