The Castillo de Bayonne is a XII century fortress , which was completed in the sixteenth century , located in the town of Bayonne Pontevedra . Also known as Boi Mount Fortress .

Since 1966 houses a National Parador , Count of Gondomar . It has a great historical importance , since in March 1493 Martin Alonso Pinzon returned to the coast of Bayonne after his trip to America , making this villa in Europe 's first heard the news of the discovery of the New World .

Mount Royal was a strategic point on which was formed over the centuries to defend the maritime territory of the Rias Baixas . The transformation of the fortress town was due to the Catholic Kings that gave the respective City charter , which allowed two hundred families to settle within the walls , enjoying the same privileges as the residents of Bayonne. Its period of greatest splendor happened in the fifteenth century -XVI, was a thriving trading center , thanks to the privilege that John II of Castile granted to Bayonne and La Coruña from the only Galician ports that could trade with foreign countries. The current appearance of the castle comes from the reconstruction carried out in the sixteenth century by Diego Sarmiento de Acuña , Count of Gondomar , who renamed it Monterreal Castle , in honor of the Catholic Monarchs . Within its walls there were historical events of great importance . In its structure , we can distinguish two periods, the medieval and the Renaissance , although the site had a fort or castellum in S. II BC In 60 BC , when Julius Caesar conquered Bayonne, had to chase the rebels to their shelters in the Cies Islands. Romans , Visigoths and Muslims left their mark on the castle. In 1331 the fort was attacked by the Portuguese fleet of Admiral Peñaza Fernando I of Portugal fixing his residence in the castle. Also withstood attacks of Francis Drake pirates , and saw the arrival on March 1, 1493 of the caravel La Pinta . In 1474 , Pedro Madruga , after attacking Bayonne, Mount Boi built a tower , which still retain vestiges.
