Photographer's Note

Here is an image taken from an exhibit by Dali in the Dali Museum, Figueres, Spain.

As you enter the museum you are confronted by Dali's Cadillac (I have uploaded two workshops so that you can see it - firstly as it is and secondly after I did some artwork of my own) which he has turned into a surreal exhibit with a statue on top and these figures inside. I was struck by how much the passengers looked like Prince Charles and Lady Di. The exhibit, or installation, call it what you will seemed prophetic to me given Lady Diana's life lived in the full glare of the media spotlight and indeed so was her death, which some might argue, was caused by the media, hounding her in a chauffeur driven car.

The prophetic aspect of it came to my mind when I considered that prior to the work of Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali understood how to manipulate the media to construct an image of celebrity. In that sense and given his own ability to self promote endlessly it seemed he forsaw the coming age of media and celebrity. Hence, when I saw this exhibit I was quite taken aback since it predated the events that resulted in the death of Princess Di. Interestingly, the dummies in the car present the one who resembles Princess Di as naked and alive and it is the one who looks like Prince Charles who appears corpse like and his chest cavity is hollowed out, suggesting he is an empty shell. This rings true for me on so many levels that I could write an entire dissertation for a note here, so I will stop before they hang me for treason!
