Photographer's Note

This was taken on the roof of La Pedrera, an appartment building that was designed by Antoni Gaudi. The roof is covered with these curious chimney pots that look a bit like knights helmets - why exactly I don't know unless its a reference maybe to St George Catalunya's patron saint? The building is in the Eixample - the 19th century newer part of town that was built as an extension to the cramped medieval section of the city. The Eixample has a lot of art nouveau type buildings by Gaudi and others.

I went to the roof looking for a photo opportunity and the chimneys immediately grabbed me because of their strange shape and also I thought the contrast between the yellow and the blue of the sky would work well. I used a polariser to bring out the colour in the sky a little. I was using a manual focus rangefinder camera (not a Leica - I haven't won the lottery) so using a polariser is a little hit and miss as you can't see the effect through the viewfinder. So I took a few shots and figured one of them would be ok - this was my favourite.
