Photographer's Note

Sunday is often chosen by many TErekers for posting churches, so here it goes one. It's simple and I guess it isn't particularly relevant, at least in the context of Ávila, which has plenty of old churches much more imposing and eye catching. However, I think it has its own charm and since I found only one post of it in TE, here it goes.

It is located outside the city walls, which are the major landmark of Ávila, to the left of the POV of this post of mine and to the right of this one. It would be visible in the latter if I had used a wider POV and turned something about 45 90 degrees to the right, so one of the things that makes it interesting is that its scenic locations is quite scenic.

As far as I could investigate, it was initially built in the 12th century in Romanesque style and was successively named after Santa Lucía and San Sebastián. It gained its present name in the beginning of the 16th century, when they found inside the church a tomb with an inscription reading "San Segundo".

According to the legend, during a reform of the church done in the early 16th century, they found the remains of San Segundo (St Secundus), supposedly one of the early evangelizers of Hispania who lived in the 1st century DC and preached in a place called Abula. The exact location of this place is subject to discussion of historians, but according to a legend that seems to have appeared only in the 16th century, Abula was Avila (I guess that it is because of it that Avila people are called Abulenses instead of the expected Avilenses) and San Segundo was the first bishop of Avila. Since then, that saint is the patron of the town.

Gee... This thing of writing notes to TE posts is quite a pretext to know about History and stories related with places I visited. :-)
