Las Palmas, with 533 years of history, was in its beginnings more military camp than city. The Real de Las Palmas, built on the right bank of the Guiniguada ravine, was the first ultramarine urban center in Europe and served as an example to create hundreds of cities in America, from Patagonia to the United States.

On June 24, 1478 is the date of foundation of the city. In a short time, the Real de Las Palmas went from a military bastion - from which the conquest of Gran Canaria began - to a thriving town. Where today the Hermitage of San Antonio Abad and the Casa de Colón are located, the Castilians carried their banners.

After the conquest of the island, six years later, colonization began with the distribution of land and the introduction of cane and the manufacture of sugar destined for European markets. It is this crop that determines the first important economic, demographic and urban development of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It allows the 'jump' to the other side of the Guiniguada and gives rise to the formation of Triana. A neighborhood, from its beginnings, commercial and sailor, because also here - in the current park of San Telmo - the first port is located.

For centuries, the capital of Gran Canaria was limited to one area and another, due to the walls that served for its defense against the multitude of piratical attacks suffered in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Thus, while in October 1595 canary militias rejected the onslaught of 27 ships commanded by the British John Hawkins and Francis Drake; In June 1599, the Dutch, led by Van der Does, staged one of the most tragic episodes in our history, with the looting and burning of the most representative buildings.

The cochineal industry and the construction of the new port in the XIX century take the city out of the long lethargy of previous centuries, only cushioned by the innovations of the Enlightenment. In mid-century the city begins to extend towards the bay of La Isleta, towards the current Puerto de La Luz, whose construction in 1883 led to the modernization of the city. Without the Port, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria would be another.

By the sea came the travelers and the settlers who have been conforming the open and kind image of the palmenses. Castellanos, Flemish, Genoese and Portuguese sought here free land to settle; They stopped on the way to America or used the city as a tri-continental platform. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a melting pot of races and cultures, a cosmopolitan society.

El Real de Las Palmas, levantado en la margen derecha del barranco Guiniguada, fue el primer centro urbano ultramarino de Europa y sirvió como ejemplo para crear centenares de ciudades en América, desde la Patagonia a Estados Unidos.

El 24 de junio de 1478 es la fecha de fundación de la ciudad. En poco tiempo, el Real de Las Palmas pasó de bastión militar -desde el que se inició la conquista de Gran Canaria- a floreciente villa. Donde hoy se ubica la Ermita de San Antonio Abad y la Casa de Colón, hincaron los castellanos sus pendones.

Finalizada la conquista de la Isla, seis años después, se dio inicio a la colonización con el reparto de tierras y la introducción de la caña y la fabricación de azúcar destinada a los mercados europeos. Es este cultivo el que determina el primer impulso económico, demográfico y urbanístico importante de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Permite el ‘salto’ al otro lado del Guiniguada y da lugar a la formación de Triana. Un barrio, desde sus comienzos, comercial y marinero, pues también aquí -en el actual parque de San Telmo- se ubica el primer puerto.

Durante siglos, la capital grancanaria se limitó a una y otra zona, debido a las murallas que sirvieron para su defensa ante la multitud de ataques piráticos que padeció en los siglos XVI y XVII. Así, mientras en octubre de 1595 las milicias de canarios rechazaron la embestida de 27 navíos capitaneados por los británicos John Hawkins y Francis Drake; en junio de 1599, los holandeses, al mando de Van der Does, protagonizaron uno de los episodios más trágicos de nuestra historia, con el saqueo y el incendio de las edificaciones más representativas.

La industria de la cochinilla y la construcción del nuevo puerto en el XIX sacan a la ciudad del largo letargo de los siglos anteriores, sólo amortiguado por las innovaciones de la Ilustración. A mediados de centuria la ciudad comienza a extenderse hacia la bahía de La Isleta, hacia el actual Puerto de La Luz, cuya construcción en 1883 propició la modernización de la ciudad. Sin el Puerto, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria sería otra.

Por el mar llegaron los viajeros y los pobladores que han ido conformando la imagen abierta y amable de los palmenses. Castellanos, flamencos, genoveses y portugueses buscaron aquí tierras libres para asentarse; hicieron parada de camino a América o emplearon la ciudad como plataforma tricontinental. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria es un crisol de razas y culturas, una sociedad cosmopolita.
