Photographer's Note

On the outskirts of Menorca's Ciutadella, there is an old sandstone quarry called Ses Pedreres de S'Hostal, abandoned for a long time but recovered by a cultural association called Lithica. At S'Hostal, you can visit both the manual quarries, which are over 200 years old, as well as the mechanical quarries that began during the middle of the twentieth century. These mechanical quarries extracted stone with circular saws and precision cuts, reaching impressive depths as demonstrated by this photo. The score marks on the wall are from the saws.
