Photographer's Note

Hello friends and colleagues , today I propose a view of the central square of my city , view backlit which highlights the jets of water from the fountain of the central monument , I hope you like it , then some interesting points about the history of the plaza.

The Plaza del Arenal is located in the center of Jerez de la Frontera. Centuries ago was an Andalusian Musara to become , after the Reconquista , a scenario of duels and battles, taking hence its name ( arenarium , " instead of battles ").

Today it is the main square of the city. It is the monument horse Miguel Primo de Rivera, Mariano Benlliure . It has decorative trees and swaths .

Arenal Square took shape as ground just outside the walled city. Was near the Alcázar de Jerez, where kings and other distinguished visitors and would be hosted by the Royal door communicate to the square with the current Consistory street.
His role as the city 's main square was reinforced by the commercial importance they acquired the adjacent streets , especially Long Street .

The streets around the square once had a different name. Corn Exchange , one that is next to the building of Los Arcos, Cot , opposite Bow , is named for having been a shelter for orphans, portals Pavone , north of the square, the pulley , where the street ends Lancería .

The square was known in antiquity as " Field of the Torrecilla ," and has received several names depending on the political moment is living in Spain :

Plaza del Arenal , is the oldest name of the plaza , the current official and which has been popularly known square. The name comes from having served as an arena for struggles , battles and clashes between knights. Stresses the hard struggle which lasted three days between Ruy Paez de Viedma and Payo Rodrigues Dávila in 1343 . Arenal 's name comes from the Latin " arenariun " which means " place of combat."

Square of the Catholic Kings , notice in honor of the Catholic Monarchs as a souvenir of your visit to Jerez in October 1477. It received this name during the Franco dictatorship.
Plaza Ferdinand VII during the absolutist period name of Ferdinand VII of Spain .
Plaza de Isabel II , this labeling kept from 1850 to the Glorious Revolution , in honor of the then Queen Isabel II of Spain .
Constitution Square , during the Spanish Constitution of 1812.
Republic Square , named from 1931 to 1936.
Plaza de Alfonso XII, and was called to this place in 1876 by the Spanish monarch of this name who reigned until 1885 .

Buildings of interest :
Corn Exchange . It built during the reign of Charles II of Spain in 1683 to market fruits, vegetables and recova was used a year later to army barracks . It is currently the headquarters of the Delegation of Planning of the City of Jerez.
Courthouse. Neoclassical façade , built in the eighteenth century, was courthouse and later in the nineteenth century , home of the mayor . Next to this building existed until 1890 called " Arco del Corregidor " , created as access to the square.
