Petrovaradin Fortress - "Gibraltar on the Danube"

'City on a rock, firm as faith’. In Greek ‘petra’ means ‘rock’ and ‘var’ is ‘castle’ in Hungarian, while ‘din’ is from Turkish and it means ‘faith’. By lining up these words we get the name ‘Petrovaradin’, which, literally translated means ‘Castle on a rock, firm as faith’. Is one of the greatest fortress in Europe from XVIII century. Petrovaradin was the site of a major battle on August 5th, 1716 in which Prince Eugene of Savoy defeated the forces of the Ottomans.
Petrovaradin Fortress - a historical, architectural, artistic and tourist jewel - the ideal place for the Exit Festival. Architect Sebastian Voban designed the fortress and today it is the inseparable part of Novi Sad urban life. Its construction lasted for almost a century from 1692 until 1780.

Today the fortress is a popular tourist attraction and stages the biggest festival in South Eastern Europe. Apart from the magical atmosphere that puts a spell on visitors and performers of the festival, it prides its remarkable acoustic capacities and simultaneous musical events take place without any interference.
The Academy of Fine Arts, the Novi Sad City Museum, the Historical Archives, the Equestrian Club and the Archery Club all have their place at the fortress. Beneath it is a famous complex of catacombs that can be visited with professional guides. The inner buildings also host art studios where you can experience the process of art in the making.
