Photographer's Note

The monastery of Krušedol has a church dedicated to the Annunciation of the Mother of God. It was built between 1509 and 1516 by Bishop Maksim (formerly Despot Djordje Brankovic), enjoying the financial support of his mother Angelina, Valachian duke Jovan Njagoj and Russian grand prince Vassily. When the Turks were retreating from the Srem in 1716, the monastery was demolished, its church gone in fire. The baroque bell-tower was erected in 1726, and the residences were completely reconstructed by 1753. The iconostasis of Kru šedol contains icons from different periods, from the 16th to the 19th century.
The original frescoes of the interior were painted in 1545, but they were overpainted in oil technique between 1745 and 1757. The 18th century paintings were carried out by Jov Vasilijevic and Stefan Tenecki with a group of local artists.
