Photographer's Note

Romania’s fishing fleet was once the third largest in Europe and 10th largest in the world. The capacity to provide for domestic consumption dropped once the fleet disappeared, from 8 kilograms per capita before 1990 to around 2.5 kilograms in the 90’s. After Romania had joined the EU in 2007, the Agency for Fishing and Aquaculture within the Ministry of Agriculture drew up a strategic plan to develop Romanian fisheries, with help from professional associations. We thus managed to identify areas where fishing should benefit from support through European funds. Fish consumption is on the rise, currently standing at over 6 kilograms per capita, while the European average is 20 kilograms per capita.
