Cozia monastery paintings, a photo from Vilcea, West

Photographer's Note

Like other monasteries in Romania in addition to fulfilling its task of administration of the territory and the preservation of theological culture, Cozia served as a defensive bastion to control the territory. A couple of years after completing the ensemble, the frescoes were painted, around 1390-91, preserved to this day.

Un par de años después de terminar el conjunto se pintaron los frescos, hacia 1390-91, conservados hasta hoy.

Hello Luis,
A beautiful photo of these painting, the colours are great and well-saturated, the combination of warm tones with the deep blue is very attractive. Good exposure as well.

Hello Luis,
It would have been nice to see a WS showing this fresco in a greater context, but I am happy enough with this fine and well exposed photo. The paintings are quite beautiful and as usual it makes me think of the persons creating this more than 700 years ago. Did they consider the beauty, or was the religious significance the only thing on their mind?

An old fresco with colorful religious theme.
A restoration job would most probably regain its ancient granduer. Manage well under the conditions.

Hola Luis,

These murals are in remarkable repair, considering their age. They are obviously highly regarded and maintained to a high standard.
Your photograph clearly reveals the subjects and the style of the time. I love how all the religious figures are shown with a huge, golden halo.
I remember, as a child, if I was ever involved in any religious story, the most senior characters had halos, held in place by silvery ropes of tinsel!

Hello Luis,
I'm not sure if these frescoes are on a wall or on the ceiling.
Maybe on the inside of a dome.
One of the many art treasures in Romanian churches and monasteries.
I 've also seen quite a few in Bukovina in the north of the country.
