Photographer's Note

If you will ever travel in this remote part of Romania, called Maramures, you will experience what I could say is the overwhelming hospitality of these people.
They are nice, friendly people and very proud of their history and traditions.
The traditional life here is startling to most westerners.

I met this old women in the village of Budesti. I wanted to talk to her about the clothes she is wearing, about the fact of not making the change to wearing “city clothes” as they call them. It’s their tradition, they have seen these at their parents, their grandparents. They will not change it, especially the older ones. The younger ones are wearing these for church on Sunday followed by promenading in the streets.
The women wear boldly striped woolen aprons front and back. Each village has its own colors for aprons, and style for hats, some straw, some felt. Even if it was winter, she was still wearing the oldest type of footwear (opinci) peasant sandals.

I asked her to take a picture of her. It’s something new for them, they are not very used to photos. Then she posed for me, smiling in her own way.
