Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral, a photo from Cluj, West

Photographer's Note

A quick grab shot of the Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral before a bus came hurtling around the corner. It is a hybrid Renaissance and Byzantine styled building dating from 1923-1933, and it is also still a functioning church. I have cloned out a black wire at top right. Behind it is Avram Iancu Square.

A magnificent photo of the impressive cathedral. The sidelight is wonderful and the many details of the white walls and the darker domes stand out beautifully from the very blue sky. Great shot.

Hello Chris,
The white cathedral makes quite an impression in the perfect light under the dark blue sky. It's not very old compared to a lot of churches but it's really beautiful. Or maybe it's mainly a matter of light. Cluj-Napoca is perhaps not the most beautiful Romanian city but I thought it was the nicest in terms of pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.

The vertical format makes the picture a bit of a view upwards making the church grand and impressive.

Chris, that church located in Cluj-Napoca has both Rennaissance and Byzantine architectural styles. It an imposant religious monument. I like the bulbous dome with columns. Good framing, splendid colors.

hello Chris, a great view of this cathedral in Cluj-Napoca. Good picture taken from the bus (?). I wonder if it is possible to climb up and to see the view from this platform on the dome.

Hi Chris,
great piece of architecture. I like in particular the interesting sculpted surface of the top dome.
The relatively low light brought in a lot of shadow but the essentials are well lit and even some decorative elements are emphasized by the shadows.

Hello Chris,
An interesting church in a special mix of neo styles. Apparently popular at that time, because here too a new (Roman Catholic) cathedral was built in predominantly neo Byzantine style.
The bright sunlight provides a deep contrast and beautiful speaking shadows.
