Photographer's Note

I took a short trip with a friend of mine that works for the Folk&Art Museum in Tulcea. He led me to this man. An old friend of his -- Hristache, 69 years of age. Hristache is a megleno-romanian, a mixture of greek, macedonian, bulgarian and romanian blood. People like him are shepards or traders(of sheep, mostly). He is no different. Even if he and his wife Florica have pensions good enought to esure a decent living, he is still raising goats and sheep, not only to help his son and other relatives, but as he said himself: ' Too feel free while i still can! ' . He lives 5 days a week in a small, and i mean SMALL hut near the pleaces he leads the animals to graze(them rest of 2, in the village, with his wife). No electricity. No radio. No other utilities. But who needs them, he sais. He cannot imagine himself laying in bed..his place is in nature as he tells us. Being surrounded by trees and animals, being able to gaze at the sky so incrusted with stars, being able to breathe the fresh morning air -- that's what makes a man, Hristache whispers to us and takes another sip of wine. I ecountered more hospitality from him and his family than i ever encountered from anyone else i had ever been to. That is why i tried to show him in a warm light, partially undiscovered, a king in his 'lair' .
Told you before i was proud of being a romanian, even more -- a dobrudjan.

Hope you like this one, i tried to make it special,
