Interior of the Moldovita monastery, a photo from Suceava, East

Photographer's Note

The Moldovița frescoes were painted by Toma de Suceava in 1537 and are well preserved. The predominant color is yellow and blue and they represent scenes from Orthodox Christian art: a procession of saints is heading towards the Virgin enthroned with the Child on her lap, above the east window; the Tree of Jesse is at the base of the wall; The "Siege of Constantinople" commemorates the Virgin's intervention to save the city from Persian attack in 626 (although the depicted siege appears to be the Fall of Constantinople in 1453).

The high arches allow natural light to enter the interior of the church. "The Last Judgment" covers the entire surface of the west wall with its river of fire and its representation of the sea and the judgment of the dead.

Los frescos de Moldovița fueron pintados por Toma de Suceava en 1537 y están bien conservados. El color predominante es el amarillo y el azul y representan escenas del arte cristiano ortodoxo: una procesión de santos se dirige hacia la Virgen entronada con el Niño en su regazo, por encima de la ventana este; el Árbol de Jesé se encuentra en la base de la pared; El "Asedio de Constantinopla" conmemora la intervención de la Virgen para salvar la ciudad de ataque persa en el año 626 (aunque el asedio representado parece ser la Caída de Constantinopla de 1453).

Los arcos altos dejan entrar luz natural al interior de la iglesia. "El Juicio Final" cubre la superficie entera de la pared oeste con su río de fuego y su representación del mar y el juicio a los muertos.

Also the interior of this monastery is beautiful with appealing colours and lots of smaller pictures, which are still very well and clearly seen, also in the light, which you handled skilfully.

Hello Luis,
For some reason the exterior view of this monastery, as seen in your last photo, seems to be much more often shown in guide books and tourist pamphlets than these magnificent interior paintings. Maybe it's just difficult to take good photos here, but you did well. Only the lower part is slightly overexposed, but most of the view is brilliantly captured and shows us a stunning collection of paintings of impressive quality and beauty.

Not the most easy interior to take good shots but we can enjoy the colourful frescoes very well here.
After all these centuries, the colours are still very well expressed.

Hola Luis,

When people were unable to read, this series of murals would have had a massive impact, telling the religious stories that they knew so well. You can understand why children love cartoons and comic magazines, which are so strongly visual!
Thank you for sharing this interior shot. It still surprised me, though it is very reminiscent of the exterior.

A nice picture taken in very difficult circumstances though to much different light
Soft contrast too with the wall paitings.
