Photographer's Note

This is the natural "marvel" called the Sphynx of Bucegi- a soft rock shaped by winds and rain to look somewhat like the face of a Dacian (ancient proto-Romanian people) wearing some sort of cap while standing cross-armed, supposedly.
All I saw was a somewhat strange rock and a lot of "tourists" that could not help themselves but climb the fragile crumbling boulder. It is sedimentary rock- I'm not a geologist by any stretch but I know that if something has lots and lots of stripes and easily comes apart when you step on it it must be sedimentary and fragile and ..protected, maybe?
A hilarious thing happened, a mother with a small boy burst out with laughter when the junior asked her, pointing to the rock: Mom,is that the sphinc..ter? No, not a sphincter, a .. ...hahaha, and I almost dropped my camera too.
Technical note : That is the Bucegi Sphincter. Oups, no, Sphynx. The light was extremely harsh and the colors of the landscape were almost selenar. In truth, a very fine dust from the destruction of the rock covers all the plateau. Icing and de-icing, water infiltration etc wreck havoc to the local sedimentary layers. The Bucegi mountains are accretion mountains- they used to be sea floor until recently-on a cosmological scale of course. To the left you can see a stone circle- no, no rituals there (I think?) but a mark for the "best photo spot" allegedly marked to capture the almost human likeness of the said sphincte...erm, sphynx. There are fossils still visible on some rocks, mainly sea shells and early vertebrates still visible when climbing.
The camera used was a total piece of junk, a Samsung ES 90 with a seemingly nice (CCD) sensor but horrible ergonomics and the menus of a microwave oven from the 90's. Good riddance I pawned it quickly and I got a megazoom.
