Photographer's Note

Romania is one of the few countries I know of where you can still see horse drawn carts being used in daily life. What is especially interesting to me is that while you see them in the countryside, they are also quite a common sight in the city! This picture was taken in a suburb area of Iasi, called Dancu and I saw horse drawn carts much much closer to the urban center than this. They were a very common sight. However, while this and many other remnants of the past are still very much a way of life in Romania, in other ways, the country has been thrust into the modern world. Sky scrapers and apartment blocks have taken over many of the towns, American and other foreign music is blasted everywhere, and Romanian is one of the most commonly spoken languages at Microsoft. I like this picture because it is photographic proof of this strange combination.
