Photographer's Note
SEE THE WS.
The prestigious Lonely Planet travel publisher qualifies it as “the most beautiful church in Bucharest”, even though the Romanian capital, especially in its historic center, has a host of first-rate churches.
Stavropoleos, in fact, is tiny, to the point that it is difficult to understand how so much art and so much beauty can be condensed there.
Its name is a Romanian derivation of the Greek stauropolis, which means "the city of the cross."
The original church dates from 1724, but at the end of the 19th century it was in such a sorry condition that it was even proposed to demolish it. Fortunately, it did not go so far: Ion Mincu, a famous Romanian architect who had studied in France and shared the ideas of Violet-le-Duc (who also inspired the restoration of San Martín de Frómista), began some restoration and reconstruction work that gave as a result the church we know today.
In the tiny space adjacent to the church, Mincu added a small but beautiful courtyard, which, like a cloister open on one side - the one facing the street - blends in harmoniously with the rest of the building.
The rich carved stone decorations, which adorn both the pillars and the window frames, the fine façade, the colorful exterior murals are an impressive testimony to the brâncovenesc style that flourished in Romania in the 18th century, an eclectic mix with Renaissance influences , Baroque, Byzantine and Islamic (during its construction Romania belonged politically to the Ottoman Empire).

A fine close-up picture to this attractive window and iron-wrought fence in front, Luis.
It has a bit of Andalucian influence, did not think of Romania when first saw this.
Buenas tardes,

Hola Luis,
Yes, the w/s is technically better but the photograph captures the condensed delight of so many different patterns, in so many different colours and so many different materials!
The minimalistic inclusion of the pale, flat plastered wall acts as a canvas upon which the many intricate patterns can be showcased.
Excellent exposure.
My warm regards,
Bev 😊

Hola Luis,
what a beautiful detail and photographed in a fantastic light as well. This light gets the most of the view, longer shadows emphasize well the ornamental decorations.
Your reportage encourages me more and more to visit this off the beaten track destination,
Excellent work,

Hello Luis,
Maybe I only show my ignorance, but without any explanation I would have thought this to be taken somewhere much closer to your home than Bucharest. It's a fantastic window and it's beautifully framed. The light and colours are pleasantly warm. I reacted a bit to the tilt, but you fixed that in the WS, so it's okay.
Best regards,
Gert

Hello Luis,
It's indeed an artistic masterpiece of a window.
Thanks for the corrected version in the WS.
I admit that I haven't seen neither this window nor this church when I visited Romania in 2005. Many monuments in the country were in a rather neglected state. The country was also not yet prepared for tourists. Your photos amaze me how beautiful Bucharest can be. I didn't experience the Romanian capital that way at the time.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Luis
That's a cracking shot of ornately carved stonework, religious artistry and craftsmanship that very much alive. They dont build them like that any more these days. It's an appealing piece of art work and a pleasure to view guided by your excellent foreword. Congrats
Best regards
