Codlea is one of the old towns that used to be mostly polulated by sasi (Romanian-Germans).
When transilvania was concured by the hungariens, the hungarien kings brought in germanic population (from Rin area) in the Carpatien Mountains, at the border with the rest of the Romanian teritories in order to make Transilvania lose cultural contacts with the other Romanians.
First king to have brought germans in Transilvania was Geza the II (1143 - 1163). They were subjected to the king.
Matei Covin united the sasi and in 1542, when Tansilvania became a free land, they got an even more important role in the development of the principat.
They have strugled to remain an entity during hunderds of years and somehow they have managed. They still have schools in their own language and their own political and administrative organizations, although a lot of them went back to Germany, in time...expecially during comunism.
