Calatrava goes Ridley Scott

I write this with the echoes of the pervasive P-Funk groove of the Funkadelic/Parliament concert of yesterday night in Paradiso-Amsterdam still in my head. I won’t interrupt the travelogue in a too early a stage, so some pics of the concert will be posted later.

Displayed here are the bowels of the Estação do Oriente designed by Santiago Calatrava. Having been a distant admirer of this station it was a bit of a shock to be here as a user.
The architecture is audacious with its mix of modern and retro morphology, the integration with its surroundings is immaculate, but there is something lacking in the human touch: the routing is not obvious and the combination of scale and forms looked a tad disorientating and maybe even a bit threatening. Standing on the spot where this pic was captured we both had the association with a stage set of an Alien movie of director Ridley Scott.

You can see the 4 levels of this multi-modal station. On the top level are the train platforms, the middle levels are for the station facilities and connect to the bus and taxi station on the left and the Parque das Nações on the right and on the bottom level gives access to the green line subway station.

I balanced the Oly on a barrier and waited for a suitable arrangement of the travellers in the frame.
PCS tech: ran Rt-lens for correction of the lens distortion, corrected for perspective distortion, slightly cropped; contrast, curves & saturation adjusted; altered the exposure of assorted elements; USM-ed; added a frame and saved for the web.
