Photographer's Note

From the Sagres Promontory, at the southwesternmost point of Europe, the spirit of Prince Henry the Navigator, who had completed his voyage on Earth one generation earlier, 1460, witnesses the fall of Neptune into the Abyss, the pre-condition for the portuguese sailors, under the command of captain Vasco da Gama, to complete the first ocean voyage from Europe to Asia, at Calicut, Kerala, India, 22 May 1498.

Pinnacle of portuguese Poetry - "Os Lusíadas", 6:70 to 6:99
Day of fate 22 May 1498 is the focal point of Luíz Vaz de Camões "Os Lusíadas" odyssey, a poem that consists of ten Cantos.
Ever since it was published 1572, the pinnacle of portuguese poetry.
In Canto VI, (6:70 to 6:91), at the end of the incredible voyage that begun in Lisbon, the portuguese caravelas face and survive Neptune's ultimate weapon, the hurricane's eyewall, described with incredible accuracy (6:70 to 6:79).

Immediately after, the first sight of India (6:92) and Vasco da Gama on his knees praises the Lord (6:93, 6:94) for the miracle.

At this hour of glory and decisive day in the History of Mankind, Canto VI ends with a most powerful insight into the line between good and evil deeds (6:95 to 6:99).

Pinnacle of Human Discoveries
May 22 1498 is the pinnacle of Human Discoveries to the East, together with the day, some years earlier, when Bartolomeu Dias opened the gates of the Indian Ocean at the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa.

The day Columbus reached the Caribbean, six years earlier, is the pinnacle of Human Discoveries to the West, together with the day, more than one generation earlier, when Gonçalo Cabral discovered the Azores Islands, following Prince Henry's unprecedented order to sail West until he found land.

A few years later, Fernão de Magalhães (Magellan) would open the gates of the Pacific Ocean at the strait that carries his name, during the voyage that marked the fifth and last pinnacle of Human discovery voyages.
