Photographer's Note

The Gardens of the Palácio Nacional de Queluz have always retained the character of a summer retreat, which is what Queluz was originally intended to be, far from the routine and protocol of the Court, and from the very beginning they were most carefully tended since they constitute a natural extension of the rooms of the Palace. The Royal Quinta de Queluz initially comprised a set of properties that were gradually acquired by King Pedro III and King João VI, but today these have been reduced to the land immediately surrounding the Palace, comprising about 15 hectares distributed between the upper gardens and the parkland.
Designed by Robillion, on the lines of French geometrical models, the gardens laid out at Queluz offer us two upper gardens – The Malta Garden and the Hanging Garden - separated one from the other and from the remainder of the park by a balustrade.
Profusely decorated with lakes (Neptune Lake and the Lake of Amphitrite), stone sculptures (sphinxes and putti) and lead sculptures (Vertumno and Pomona, Meleagre and Atlante) most of them from Italy and England respectively, the gardens and the park provides a mythological route of discovery which abounds with gods and heroes of classical antiquity and with numerous allegorical figures. Many of the statues were painted in bright colours or partially gilded.
The gardens of the Palace were a privileged place of leisure and the scene for the many parties and pastimes of the Royal Family who attended firework displays, bullfights and equestrian diversions, at the Tiled Canal the Royal Family sailed in small boats on summer evenings. Today the gardens still preserve much of their former charm and beauty.
