Photographer's Note

Date of 1496 the order made for king D.Manuel I to the Saint Sé , in the direction of being granted authorization to it to elevate a great monastery to the entrance of Lisbon, close to the edges it Tejo. In 1501 the works had started and approximately a century later, the workmanships were concluded. The reasons of the construction of the Monastery of the Jerónimos are arrested, for certain, with the will of the monarch to congregate in pantheon initiated by it (Avis-Beja).
D. Manuel I and its descendants they had been buried in marble tombs placed in the chapel-mor of the Church and lateral chapels .
The devotion of the Monastery to the Virgin of Belém was another factor that weighed in the regal decision. The Monastery of the Jerónimos, as vulgarly it is known, came to substitute the long ago existing church in the same place, whose invocation was Saint Maria de Belém and where monges of the Order of Christ gave assistance to the navigating in transit. The building shows an extensive façade of more than three hundred meters, obeying a horizontalidade principle that confers it a calm and repose aspect. It was constructed in calcareous rock of lioz that it was taken off next to the implantation place very, in the Ajuda, the Vale Alcântara, Laveiras, Rio Seco and Tercena. Given to the greatness of project and the wealth of the execution, the responsible masters for them had succeeded themselves taken over on a contract basis of construction and: Diogo de Boitaca (c.1460-1528), João of Castilho (c.1475-1552), Diogo de Torralva (c. 1500-1566), Jerónimo de Ruão (1530-1601) is some of the names that the Monastery remembers and that they had left mark indelével in this monument. D. Manuel I he canalized for the great workmanships of Belém additions. Good part of the call "Group of twenty of the Pepper" (approximately 5% of prescriptions proceeding from the commerce with Africa and the East, the the equivalent 70 kg of gold per year) served to defray the works that, since the beginning, elapse in narrow dependence of the proper king.
