Photographer's Note
The bridge crosses the Sorraia River close to Benavente.
Before it joins the Tagus, north of Vila Franca de Xira, the Sorraia flows on a wide valley covered with thousands of acres of rice fields. These fields have been cultivated since Roman times and some ancient irrigation works still stand.
The iridescence on the water shows the consequences of an important oil spill a few days before, that had put at the risk this fragile ecosystem.
As a point of curiosity, Sorraia is also the name of a native horse breed, and plenty information about this horse can be found on Wikipedia.
