At the entrance of the port of Lisbon, Jeronimos Monastery, whose construction began in 1502, exemplifies Portuguese art at its peak. The nearby Tower of Belém, built to commemorate the expedition of Vasco de Gama, recalls the great maritime discoveries that laid the foundations of the modern world.
