Photographer's Note

This is Monsaraz an ancient village in Alentejo. The houses stay inside the fortified walls and there is no building outside. The village was slowly dying, as most of the small villages on this area, when the waters from the Alqueva dam reached itís foothills.

From one day to the other, the East view from those walls became something never seen on those dry lands, and tourists started to come along. Stone paved streets were cleaned, houses painted, gift shops and restaurants came along. Everything is very discrete to keep it raw and pure, and cars are not allowed in.

Monsaraz is now almost a living museum, seeming to have been frozen 50 years ago.
