Photographer's Note

This is the deserted buffet car of the Villa Real de San Antonio – Lisbõa express train which is displayed here.
Buffet cars are the nervous centres of long distance trains. Much of the romanticism of rail travel has to do with the goings on in this type of cars. People meet, tell stories, have drinks, munch on a light snacks while being mesmerized by the moving landscape and share moments. But alas, these cars are being de-commissioned by the score. The European rail operators divert much of their resources to their High Speed Train networks (HST, TGV, ICE. AVE etc). Let’s hope that this rugged and Spartan stainless steel buffet car survives when HST’s are introduced in Portugal. And that the fact that there was no catering on this service was no tell tale sign.
The picture is taken with a 16 mm wide angle lens. The elongated counter takes up a very dominant position. Behind this counter there are refrigerators, storage and cooking equipment.
PS-E2 tech: rotated, cropped, levels, saturated (master), fill flashed selected shadow parts, darkened the strong highlights, sharpened (the whole pic and parts with the sharpen brush) and
saved for the web.
