Photographer's Note

The church at Cacela Velha dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption stands on a cliff overlooking a beach, a picture of which I posted earlier in this series.

A church has stood on this site since the 13th century, after the Christian reconquest of the Algarve region. Of this, only the small side Gothic doorway remains. The existing building was largely constructed in the 16th century but was subject to much restoration in the 18th century following an earthquake that struck a large area of Southern Portugal and Lisbon.
