Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios.

On the 15th century a small chapel existed where the Senhora dos Remédios church is now; one century later, the Lamego bishop ordered an image of the Madonna – which was known as to provide remedy for all evil – to be set at a new church which would be built to replace the old chapel. Since then, hommages have been attracting more and more devotees which led to the need of a greater sanctuary, built during the 18th century.

Each September, Lamego celebrates the city’s patron saint along with the thousands that come to take part in the shows, concerts, exhibitions, fireworks, dances and even sports events which last for three entire weeks.

Feast includes a previous march where flowers feature; and the Triumph Procession – Procissão do Triunfo –, unique in the planet, is the highlight of the entire celebrations: carrying the statue of the saint is a wooden framework driven by a yoke of oxen – only possible with a special permission from the Holy See.
