Photographer's Note

The caretos gather in the little square for the Reading of the Will, one of the most important moments of the day, always in the presence of the donkey. These masks are usually carved on a single piece of adler wood.
This is one of the most Portuguese celebrations of Carnival in Portugal. It takes place in a village in the mountains, near Lamego. It is called Lazarim. Here, on Tuesday, the caretos - people wearing a mask like this one and also costumes - come to the street to show their originality. These masks are sculpted on alder wood, by a few artisans in the village. It takes many hours to do a mask like these ones. Most part of the participants have a new mask every year because there is a contest for the best masks and also for the best caretos. The masks may have horns, moustache, snakes...
