Photographer's Note

Lamego is a city and municipality in the Viseu District, in the Norte Region of the Douro in northern Portugal. Located on the shores of the Balsemão River, the municipality has a population of 26,691, in an area of 165.42 km².

With origins before the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, Lamego is known for its historic city centre, having a long history as a principal city of the former Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro Province. Legend holds that the first Portuguese Cortes were held in Lamego, in 1143. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Lamego is based in the city.

The most significant moment in the town's history was in 1139, when nobles declared Afonso Henriques to be Portugal's first king. The town's Gothic cathedral was built by him, although only the Romanesque tower is left from the original building, with its carved Renaissance portal and fine cloister dating from the 16th and 18th centuries. The 12th-century castle preserves a fine keep and a very old and unusual cistern with monograms of master masons.

King Sancho I issued a charter of independence in 1191, as the local community grew around two poles: the ecclesiastical parishes of Sé and Castelo. In 1290, King Denis provided a market charter to the city, attracting merchants from Castile and Granada with their oriental spices and textiles.

Hello Stephen, i haven't heard of Lamego and it seems a very nice place. Interesting how the trees are cut here. Nice big square, beautiful architecture, specially the houses far away. Very nice postcard view made in fine weather.

Hello Stephen,

This looks so very appealing!
It is a wide open space, where the trees are very well used in your photograph and for the town, bring in a sense of countryside.
For March, it looks warm and sunny, the sunlight giving colour to the tiles and creating long interesting shadows from trees that we have to imagine.
It's great to go away at this time of year, when the light is good and the places are not too busy.

Very nice and peaceful square on a lovely morning.
I think it's a really fine POV with the oval lawn as the anchor point of the eye and things going on around it. The "shaved" trees are very nice graphically, and the colors are delicate and natural. I like the bench and the lone pedestrian left. A few tulips could have been nice in the middle of the lawn, eh?

La place est pour le moment très ensoleillée mais nul doute qu'au mois de juin les feuilles offriront un bel abri d'ombre. Le terre plein apporte de la profondeur .

you had a wicked day for photos too, the blue sky is sweet and light, not too strong.

I really like the architecture here, very photogenic.

I like the way you photographed this scene as well as the title you chose for it. This place looks central but it's also very quiet on a Monday morning. We are invited to cross the square, perspective and clarity work superbly. The light and the vivid, contrasting colours give a special, graphic charm to the scenery. bella e soleggiata piazza, si vedono i preparativi per l'imminente primavera, gli alberi sono stati potati e il terreno è stato lavorato, mentre il signore con il bastone sembra controllare che i lavori siano stati fatti bene.
Bella composizione, un luogo poco conosciuto e per questo una bella condivisione per TE.

Good framing on the central oblong shape of the twin flower stands and green lawn. Plenty of breathing space right around and good colour and saturation. The clear blue sky is a bonus. Excellent density levels and nice shadow play at right. Tfs.
