Photographer's Note

Leiria castle,

In central Portugal, was first built in the early XII century and gained importance in the subsequent three centuries, particularly during King Denis' (Rei Dom Dinis) reign. The royal pinewoods sown at this time (Pinhal de Leiria) would later be used to build the ships on which the Portuguese Navigators like Prince Henry, Bartholomeu Dias, Vasco Da Gama, discovered and circumnavigated the globe for the first time in history.
The present castle has been restored several times but kept the original structures from the 1100's style.
