Ponta do Sol

Located 18 km from Funchal, Ponta do Sol is home to the County. Located on the south coast of Madeira Island, is bordered on the west by the municipality of Calheta, on the north by the municipalities of San Vicente and Porto Moniz, and east by the municipality of Ribeira Brava.
Your place name arises because Gaspar Fructuoso stated that in 1420, João Gonçalves Zarco in reconnaissance trip off the coast of Madeira, has reached a point that entered the sea and upon which they could see a rock that is so polished by the surf of the sea, seemed illuminated by reflection of sunlight. This finding stemming from the name of Ponta do Sol
