‘Porto Moniz - Walking along the levada’

For Mariusz

Recently Mariusz showed us a photo of a levada on the island of Madeira and checking my gallery on TE, I realised that I never uploaded a picture including a levada…

I agree with Mariusz that these small man-made canals offer great hiking opportunities and there are so many of them spread over the island.
Years ago I made some beautiful hikes on the island. Sometimes with very impressive views.
The most impressive hike I made was from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo. Also one of the highest walks on the island but there were no levadas.
Looking back at my pictures from 11 years ago, I didn’t immediately find a photo that combined both a very impressive landscape and a levada.

Still, I maintain that these small canals take you along some wonderful parts of the island.
Sometimes you pass through tunnels. Therefore it’s necessary to bring a flashlight.
In the WS a photo of a levada entering a tunnel and another photo taken in a tunnel.
In most tunnels you can see the end but I also remember one that made a bend inside the mountain so that the other end wasn’t visible. Of course you have to be careful not to slip in the dark and end up in the water. In some tunnels water drips from the wall and the rocky bottom becomes slippery.

I'm very sorry, but I can’t find anymore where exactly I took these pictures.
However, it was on a hike near the town of Porto Moniz in the northwest of the island. That’s why I catalog this photo under that town. From there a taxi took us to the starting and ending point of the tour.
