Funchal, freguesia de Monte.

On Sunday, "carros de cesto" are at rest. The week they make the happiness of hundreds of tourists, tempted by the most famous attraction of the island of Madeira: a 2km descent in these wicker sleigh, guided by two conductors in traditional dress, "Carreiros".

This course at high speed in the steep streets of Monte, a freguesia (subdivision) of the city of Funchal, takes about ten minutes.

In the nineteenth century, wicker sledge was the main means of transport used by residents of Monte to go to Funchal.
