Photographer's Note

Palacio de São Lourenço, Funchal, Madeira.

Arriaga avenue is probably one of the most beautiful streets of Funchal. In any case, this is the one I preferred.

Because it is lined with beautiful buildings: the Cathedral, the theater, and the Palais de São Lourenço are the finest examples.

Because it privileges the footpath, under the shade of young trees and on beautiful white and black mosaics.

Because it leads to the pretty municipal garden, a haven of freshness.

Because you can sit on a bench watching the long, very long line of yellow cabs and their drivers that push their car "by hand" while waiting for the client.

In this photo, the Palace of São Lourenço. The fortress was built in the fifteenth century and was the residence of the Governor of Madeira. Today, the monument still serves as the official residence for the Prime Minister and is home to military command of Madeira (this is an autonomous region).
