Photographer's Note

Contrast this, where relative humidity will almost never fall below 75 pct, with the south coast, at sea level, just a few kilometers away, where 27 C summer temperatures seldom come along with relative humidity above 65 pct.

-------
The ultimate climate paradox is to be found in the mild subtropics: where the mildest climates in the world for european races suddenly mutate into climates not suitable for permanent settlement.

The ultimate climate border is a result of the the ultimate climate paradox. Altitude and exposure trace the ultimate border in mountains of Lord Howe Island, Raoul Island, Rapa island, Madeira Island and some of the Azores islands in the subtropics, as well as in windward mountains of the main Hawaii islands in the tropics. In the Azores, that border depends also on geographical coordinates.

A border missing in the lower islands of those archipels as well as in the rest of the non-arid coasts that complete the list of the world's mildest climates:

- Norfolk Island, Pitcairn Island, South Africa's Garden Route and New Caledonia's Isle of Pines: enough moisture but not enough altitude;
- windward coasts of the Canary Islands: not enough moisture. The closer to Africa's coast the less humidity is transported by the predominant trade winds. The eastern islands, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, lacking also altitude, are arid.
- Easter Island: topography. Although 511 m, the highest point, would be high enough for the moisture the trade winds carry there, it lacks a wall, i.e. a mountain range with suficient vertical gradient.

The ultimate border separating the mildest climates in the world for european races ... from the only climates between tropical rainforest and arctic tundra able to keep any human races away... even Eskimos or Amazon Indians, Pygmies and Borneo Dayaks.
