Dwarfs in Wrocław

I had already planned to post this picture, when both Chris and Malgo asked whether I had taken any pictures of the many dwarfs in Wrocław (Wrocławskie krasnale in Polish). Of course we hadn’t missed them! The city is full of many tiny sculptures of dwarfs, portrayed in many different kinds of situations and costumes. They are all about 20-30 cm and they first appeared in the streets in 2005. Their number has being growing ever since and there are now more than 400 of them and they have become a real tourist attraction. Here are just three examples, found in different parts of the city centre.

Hej Lars,
I Sverige får man nog inte säga "dvärgar" numera. Det heter officiellt 'kortväxta'. ;-) Det verkar finnas fler av dessa små statyer nu är 2014 när jag var där. Då var de flesta i ett litet område nära Elizabeth-kyrkan. De är ganska kul och du har gjort en fin triptyk. Bilderna är fina och de är trevligt presenterade,

a nice idea to attract the visitor attention. funny sculptures with a mix of humour and art. a pity here in brazil such sculptures would be robbed in few days, as occurred in a city nearby mine and in cemeteries...

Hallo Lars,
Wie plaatst deze dwergen dan in de stad? Is iedereen vrij om ergens één of meerdere dwergen te plaatsen? Het lijkt me een mooi gebruik en hopelijk worden ze niet het slachtoffer van vandalisme of diefstal.
De gemotoriseerde dwerg in het midden verplaatst zich misschien wel af en toe :)

An interesting collage with lovely dwarfs.
There are now more gnomes in Wrocław.
Probably over 600.
I like good composition, fine details, good sharpness and wonderful color.

Hello Lars,

What a curious development!
Are these dwarfs just to encourage tourism or is there some significance that dwarfs were chosen?
I know, in our area, fairy doors have begun to appear on trees, over the last few years. I think it was to portray what a magical place the tree-lines stream areas could be but they have increased the number of people, particularly families, visiting the area.
You have not only shown skill in capturing these dwarf with excellent clarity but isn presenting them so well in a collage.

Glad you spotted some gnomes. I found some playing poker machines, selling newspapers and dressed as firemen! A superb triptych, and all images have good sharpness and color. Tfs!

Goedenavond Lars,

Gegoten in brons, dan zullen deze dwergen wel goed hun gewicht hebben.
Mooi opgedeeld in een drieluik, waarvan de middelste duidelijk sporen van mensenhanden draagt, zoals veel standbeelden in de steden.
Mooie voorstelling, scherp en duidelijke presentatie. Bedankt.

Charming and sympathetic composition with these three images of dwarf sculptures, each one representing a life activity, ignorant of this Wroclaw custom, which will at least bring a smile to passersby.
The management of color and light are magnificent, highlighting the beauty and sharpness of the image.

Ik ben deze week begonnen om al mijn dwergenfoto’s uit Wroclaw te sorteren en daarna moet ik nog uitzoeken hoe ze allemaal heten.
Toen ik daar mee bezig was vond ik het wel een beetje Pokemon-avant la lettre.
Je mooie drieluik geeft alvast een goed beeld van de variatie.
