Photographer's Note

Wigry Lake is located on the border of Lake plains Augustow and Suwalki. Its shape recalls the letter "S". Due to the shape of the coastline of the lake was originally bore the name Wingry that drawn from jaćwieskiego words wingris (sinuous, serpentine). In the year 1418 under the name of the lake mentioned Polish chronicler Jan Dlugosz. Coastline has a length of about 60 km, the banks are high and covered with coniferous forests.

There are many peninsulas, such as High Wągieł length of about 4 km, forked horn, Klasztorny and islands, which occupy an area of approximately 70 hectares. On the peninsula, the monastery is located in the historic town Wigry former monastery where the order Camedolite in 1999 odpoczywał Pope John Paul II. For rivers and straits Wigry lake connects to 16 other lakes. Over the lake flows Hańcza Black. In the northern part of the lake affects the river Wiatrołuża. In some of these rivers established zakolach refuge beavers [1].

In the earlier period was the current lake Wigry fragment complex termed Prawigry, which included several neighboring tanks. They are now separate lakes: Long, Muliczne, round, Leszczewek. Lake Wigry consists of several parts (PLoS), which differ in size, depth, number of islands, the nature of the banks and fertility waters (trofią). A large part of Wigier characterized by moderate trofią (There are still rare animals, and oxy-zimnolubne). Typical of the species belong to the lower trofii them fish: whitefish and shellfish and aquatic sielawa of the genus Mysis and Pallasiola, zasiedlające deeper lakes area. Litoral Lake for the most part retained the original character. In the vast trzcinowiskach can be found about 140 species of birds, of which about 30 are aquatic birds, or water and swamp. Protection of fish fauna consists of species of restitution, which occurred in the past and from different causes or that they had died a few (sea trout lake, sum) [2]. As yet there is Wigry sielawa and whitefish - species are susceptible to deterioration of the aquatic environment. Wigry is one of two Polish lakes, which joins the spawning whitefish (the second is a lake near Stargard Miedwie).

The edges of the lake are in most places of the original, unchanged by man. They are a paradise for animals, including about 140 species of birds. To the west, south and east shores of Lake Forest reaches Augustowska, drawn far beyond the borders of the country to Druskininkai and Hrodna.

For the purposes of protection of species of valuable activities are carried out on increasing the number of large predatory fish (Fish biomanipulacja. predators such as pike) reduce the size of the carp fish, which results in reducing the pressure on the zooplankton and in turn reduce the zakwitów algae planktonowych, contributing to the emergence of periodic deficits oxygen in profundalu [3].

In 1975, he was Lake Wigry entered the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to list the most valuable areas the world (The "Aqua"). In contrast, in 1998, the International Society of limnological (SIL) program covered the lake Wigry scientific and lobbying for its protection. "[4]
