Photographer's Note

These are the communal washing facilities inside one of the prison blocks. This particular building has been retained in its original state so that visitors can appreciate the appalling conditions in which prisoners were kept. I have difficulty in expressing feelings about this place in words - instead I will post a workshop showing the memorial plaque at Birkenau.

A few technical notes about this photo: It was originally shot in colour. Before converting to B&W I strongly emphasised the yellow hue (using variations). This created extra contrast without unduly upsetting the light balance of the photo. After decolourising I added a small amount of grain (Filter - Artistic - Film Grain). This gave the effect of aging the picture as well as bringing out the rough surface of the wall and the shards of sunlight. Finally I applied sharpening to show the detail in the sink and taps.
