Photographer's Note

Krakow attracts all sorts of visitors. In the past there were many who came for a cheap beer. This was a difficult time for people in Krakow because for Polish people it is a city of theatres, cafes and culture. After a while British tourists became quite infamous here. There is something about it. Recently Spain introduced a limit on all inclusive holidays to 6 drinks per day, which caused an outrage in Britain.

But I really wanted to talk about how various tourists venture in different areas of the city. Many visitors come just to see the impressive Main Market Square and the Royal Castle. Getting lost in the side streets of the market square is a great experience because one can find amazing full of character cafes, beautiful churches, places rarely mentioned in the guidebooks. Venturing past these two destinations you can discover even more.

This lovely church was one of my favourite churches in Krakow. It is located along a quiet side street and many people may easily miss it. It is St Anne Church, a Baroque style structure completed in 1703. It is located along St Anne Street, one of the corner streets off the Main Market Square. It is very close to old university buildings and formally it is a University Church but practically, when I was a student the most favourite church of students was the Holy Trinity Basilica (Dominicans). The interior of St Anne Church is spectacular but I had limited options for composition because formally visitors were not allowed in the church when there is a service inside and there were indeed some prayers going on at a side altar, so I tried not to attract to much attention with my camera. I tried to hide it with my body so that people behind me think that I am deep in a prayer. Only occasionally the brief moments of the silence between the prayers were interrupted by the sound of my camera, which caused very loud noise…
