Photographer's Note
This beautiful bass-relief sculpture is on the wall of the St. Mary's Basilica in Krakow's Market Square. It was placed there in 1883 on the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Vienna. In this battle King John III Sobieski with his Polish and Lithuanian army defeated the Ottomans and chased them back to Hungary, what was at the time under Ottoman occupation. In Hungary the so called Holy League joined the fight against the Ottomans, and eventually freed Hungary from 150 years of Turkish/Ottoman occupation and replaced it with Austrian domination. More recognition should be given outside Poland to King John Sobieski for stopping the Ottoman advance to Europe in 1683.

Thanks for the history lesson. I like the image for it's simplicity. The medallion on the lower part of the sculptor with the three towers is very interesting.
