Photographer's Note

During our one week trip to Overijssel we stayed in Kampen. This is the view of the sun setting over the city beyond its rather iconic "stadsbrug" (city bridge) over the IJssel. I can imagine for commuters returning home after a busy day at work, this must be a wonderful sight to see.

KAMPEN is a an old port of the Hanzeatic League (Hanzestad). Before being closed off from the sea, it was a thriving centre of commerce. Later it became famous for its cigar industry. It still is, though the business is having a hard time to survive.

Kampen is a quiet sort of place. We admired its history, loved its relaxed atmosphere and for a couple of days it felt like home. I can imagine...

THIS PICTURE is the sunset view from near the train station across the IJssel. The current lift bridge dates from 1999.
